The Hostess – A Thanksgiving Poem

“So far so good,” I say inside my mind.

“The turkey’s stuffed and will be done by four.

The yams are candied, celery’s chopped, and wine

Is on the table, ready to be poured.”

I whip the soft potatoes and the cream,

I boil the cranberries until they pop

I butter rolls and toss salad the greens

And crowd the food onto the tabletop.

“It’s time to carve the turkey! Come along!”

And in the kitchen we all congregate

I pull the oven door, but something’s wrong

I get cool air when I expected heat.

This year the main course has to be foregone

For I forgot to turn the oven on.
