Benefits of Air Purifiers for Smokers

Many smokers deeply enjoy their addiction. After all, you wouldn’t keep smoking in today’s’ militant anti-smoking environment if you didn’t enjoy what you were doing. However, one unfortunate side effect of a smoking habit is that there is a certain odor associated with it. This odor can contaminate your home, by seeping into the air as second-hand smoke and also be getting in to the furniture.

One of the most effective ways to neutralize this odor and improve the overall air quality of your home is to purchase a quality air purifier. This small home appliance pulls your air through a series of filters to clean it and remove odors that may be lingering in your home. In theory, this then leaves your home, even the home of a heavy smoker, with fresh, high quality air to breathe.

In practice, not all air purification units were created equal. Now, this is not to say that there are not some highly effective units available. You just need to shop carefully to make sure that the unit you are buying can handle your home environment efficiently and effectively.

Different models approach the solution differently. Some air purifiers are built with ionic collection grids, which are wonderful for not needing to be replaced and running quietly, but which may not be able to handle the load of a heavy smoker. They tend to be good at odor neutralization within concentrated spaces, but are less well suited to removing particles from the air.

The best solution for removing both particles and odor from the air will be a HEPA filter. These do require replacement, however. Thus, you will need to be comfortable with doing a certain amount of maintenance on your machine. The filters do last for longer than you would think, but the ongoing maintenance costs are something to take into consideration when looking at your machine.

In addition to HEPA filters, you may also see AllerAir purifiers advertised. This company specifically targets smokers. They have a special additional filter design with smokers in mind, which does nothing but target smoke particles for removal. Both the AllerAir 4000 DS and the AllerAir 5000 DS are very effective.

As you shop, it is best to consider both online and offline locations. While you can get a broader selection online, buying from a local retailer will allow you to easily exchange the unit if it does not meet your needs. Also, offline purchases will allow you to get an idea of the noise level of the unit (typically quite low) and the amount of air being moved by the machine. Read customer reviews and ask your friends for recommendations, and you should be able to settle on something that will give you the health benefits of better air quality in your home while still allowing you to enjoy your smoking lifestyle.
