Red and Gold Harlequin Hearts Serving Tray for Valentine’s Day

Serve your guests in style this Valentine’s Day with this beautiful red and gold harlequin hearts serving tray.

For this project, you will need:

– An unfinished wood serving tray (available at craft supply stores)

– Medium grit sandpaper

– Tack cloth or other soft cloth

– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White

– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Cherry Red

– Krylon Leafing Pen in Pale Gold

– Krylon Leafing Pen in Shimmering Red

– Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Spray

– Pencil

– Heart shaped stencil

– 7 Gypsies “Savannah Flocked Damask” print scrapbook paper (found in stores or online at Paper Addict)

– Sponge brush

– Mod Podge or other decoupage medium

– Damp cloth

– Ruler

– Newspaper or large drop cloth

For easiest cleanup, first cover your work area with a few sheets of old newspaper or a large fabric or plastic drop cloth. Gently sand an unfinished wood tray with medium grit sandpaper. Wipe away any dust created by the sanding process with a tack cloth or other soft cloth. Spray both sides of the tray with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Dry for three to four hours before continuing.

Paint the tray with an even coat of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Cherry Red. Allow the tray to dry for one to two hours before adding a second coat of red paint. Dry overnight.

Place the tray flat on your work area. In the inside of the tray, use a pencil to mark several diagonal lines in the same direction. Repeat the process creating lines at the exact same angle in the opposite direction. (This should create a penciled in harlequin pattern.) Fill in the harlequin design with a Krylon Leafing Pen in Pale Gold. Dry for an hour before adding a second coat of gold paint. Dry overnight.

Set the heart shaped stencil in the center of the harlequin painted tray. In pencil, trace the heart shape onto the tray. With a Krylon Leafing Pen in Shimmering Red, trace the heart shape onto the tray. Dry for an hour before adding a second coat. Allow to dry for another three to four hours.

Set a piece of 7 Gypsies “Savannah Flocked Damask” print scrapbook paper flat on a self healing mat. Trace a heart design that is 1/2 inch smaller all around than the painted design on the tray. Apply a generous amount of Mod Podge or other decoupage medium to the back of the paper heart with a sponge brush. Adhere to the tray, smoothing the design with your fingers to prevent any wrinkles. Wipe away any extra glue away from the design with a damp cloth. Dry overnight.

Spray the entire project with a layer of Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Spray. Dry overnight before using.
