Granada is the provincial capital of Andalusia in Spain and it is safe to say that the city’s historical importance is second to none. From the Moorish times to the Arabic times till the Reconquista of the city, Granada has so many heritage sites to visit that just a week there will not be enough.

    Hablo Español or learn a bit of Spanish

    The first thing that you do as soon as you buy tickets for a memorable holiday in Granada, make sure that you learn basic knowledge of Spanish. Apart from Spanish nationals, around 30% of the people living in Granada know only Spanish so if you don’t know the language, ‘no hablo inglese’ would be the sentence you might as well get used to. A basic knowledge of the language is thus, very important if you want to avoid any sort of miscommunication.

    Visit the Alhambra

    As soon as you have booked a place to stay, get a cab and ask the taxi driver to take you to Alhambra, a Moorish citadel which is indeed the most renowned building of the Andalusian Islamic historical legacy. This is one of the places that make Granada one of the most popular destinations for tourists in Spain.

    The Albaicin and Sacromonte are two of the most historical districts of Granada and even today, give the feel of the Muslim era of the region when you walk down the narrow streets scented with jasmine. A lot needs to be discussed about it but it won’t be enough as the beauty of these two districts is something that reminds of the legacy of Muslim rule of Andalusia.

    Shopping

    Ok, so if you are really interested in shopping, you are in for a time of your life - even more so if you are a shopaholic! The Grenadians are masters in the art of making guitars, pottery, inlaid wood, furniture. The Nasrid art is reflected in cabinets, frames, chairs, tables and chest and if you are lucky enough to strike a bargain at a furniture shop, make sure that the piece of furniture you buy, is not harmed by anything because it’s not every day you come across such fine furniture work.

    Albayzin is the old Moorish quarter of Granada and is a World Heritage site. Try having a meal at the Las Estrellas de San Nicolas. The area is full of small bars and restaurants that are always bustling with activity.

    Carrera del Darro is a place where you will always have a lot to do. It’s a perfect street for taking a stroll and is located off of Plaza Nueva. You will also be able to get some nice views of the Alhambra from here.

    Carmen de los Martires is a beautiful garden tucked right in the middle of the city. It is a great place to go for a picnic and is something not many visitors know about.

    Monasterio Cartuja is one of the most beautiful monasteries in Spain and is decorated by beautiful paintings. If you are in Granada, you simply have to come here. Although it might look a bit ordinary initially, you will be left flabbergasted once you enter the church.

    Cathedral and Royal Chapel (Capilla Real) has a rich display of the treasures that once belonged to the Spanish monarchy. The building itself is imposing and is surrounded by the narrow streets, restaurants and shops.
