How to Sell a Race Car

It is a common known fact that whenever you sell something, in this case, a race car, private transaction pay off better than selling to a dealer.

A very limited number of people have the experience of selling a race car, because race cars are something that are not sold or purchased by the common people. In most cases, only racing teams and professional racers are seen trading racing cars.

What if you happen to have a race car in your garage, perhaps from a relative who left it to you in their will? Of course you do not need it and will be looking forward to sell it.

    Spend some time cleaning the car. May be take it out to a car wash to get the car washed thoroughly, vacuumed and waxed. If the car looks good to the eyes of a prospect buyer, the deal will definitely be more beneficial for you.

    See if some minor repair work needs to be done. Race cars repairs are in many ways different than ordinary car repairs. So if possible, take the car to a mechanic who has prior experience with race cars. Get minor repair works looked after. Although this will cost you money, but you will eventually get more money back than you spend. This is because the buyer will be willing to pay more when the car is in optimum driving conditions. Also have the mechanic appraise the car’s value.

    In order to set a reasonable price, use online tools such as Kelley Blue Book and compare it with other seller’s asking prices for similar race cars. You should be able to come up with a realistic price after that.

    Now spread the word. Start with advertising in at least a couple of newspapers. Post a few online advertisements. Tag along some pictures as well to make your online advertisements catchy. Set the asking price a little higher than the realistic price so that you can have room for bargaining.

    Gather the necessary documents such as registration booklets, owner’s manual, release of liability form etc.

    If a potential buyer wants to test drive the car, make sure they have a driver’s licence. Also, it is a good idea to keep their vehicle’s keys in your possession while they test drive your race car.

    Once the deal has been finalised and a price agreed upon by you and the buyer, all that remains to be done is to take care of the legalities such as transfer of ownership, cancellation of your insurance of the car etc.
