How to Remove Construction Adhesive

Construction adhesives are vital tools in making or bonding two things. They are usually in liquid or semi-liquid state and come from either natural or synthetic sources. Construction adhesives are used for variety of purposes ranging from flooring to make something waterproof. It is mainly used in renovating or better finishing of houses and lasts for life time.

However during construction, you may need to remove these adhesives in order to re-shape or correct something.

THINGS REQUIRED:

–         Rags and sponges

–         Water

–         Scraper

–         Utility knife

–         Acetone

–         Solvent

–         Paintbrush

–         Sandpaper or steel wool

    Clearing the adhered joint

    First you need to clear the adhered joint which you want to remove. You can do this with the help from a damp cloth. This will get rid of all barriers, allowing the solvent to directly contact the joint.

    Scrape at the joint

    After wiping the adhesive joint place, scrape it to remove easily removed adhesive. You can use a utility knife to scrape it or a razor edge scraper.

    Note that you should try to scratch out as much of adhesive as you can in order to easily remove the construction adhesive.

    Work in a well-ventilated area

    The strong fumes produced in this process are harmful for your health and causes irritation. Thus you should work in a well ventilated area or outside the house. You can ventilate the area by switching on the exhaust fans or opening your place windows and doors.

    Soak sponge in acetone

    You need to dip a sponge or rag in acetone and rub on the construction adhesive. After sponging it for almost 10 minutes, scrape the loosened adhesive. Use a putty knife to scrape the entire adhesive out.

    Apply the adhesive solvent

    Next you need to apply the adhesive solvent on the joint. Paint the construction adhesive remover and let it stay there for the number of minutes indicated in its instruction.   Remove the loosened adhesive and apply the solvent until all is removed.

    Sand the surface

    After removing the construction adhesive, use sandpaper or steel wool to sand the surface. This will remove any remaining traces of the construction adhesive.

    Wipe the surface

    In the end, clear the surface to remove left over of sanding. You can use a damp cloth to wipe the surface.
