How to Remove Rust from Metal Tools

We all have our favourite tools that we love to use every time we need to do a job.  We want the tools that we are comfortable with for certain jobs. But there are times when they get rusty due to the moisture in our surroundings.

There is no need to be alarmed as the rust can be removed from the tools and they can once again attain the looks and performance they had before getting rusty.

There are several solutions available to remove the rust from the metal tools. Here are some of them.

    Lubricant and Sponge

    For lightly rusted tools, you can use a lubricant such as WD-40. Spray it generously on the tool and spread the liquid on thoroughly. Once this is done, take a utensil cleaning pads that is rough in nature and rub the tool hard with it. In a little bit of time, the rust will start coming off and soon the tool should look as good as new. You can also use a sand paper for the purpose if the cleaning sponge does not work for you.

    Lemon Juice and Baking Soda

    Another method is to use combination of lemon juice and baking soda. Mix the two ingredients together until they form a thick paste. Spread the paste on the tool with rust and leave it for a few minutes with the solution on it. Afterwards, clean it with a towel and the rust should be gone.

    Salt and Vinegar

    You can also remove the rust with the help of other natural products such as salt and vinegar. It’s a simple procedure. Pour the vinegar on the rusty areas and then dust salt on those areas directly. Then scrub the rust with help of brush. Rinse it with water afterwards and dry it with a towel. The rust will be gone.

    Molasses and Water

    For tougher rust stains that refuse to go away, you can use what is known as the molasses method. You need one part of molasses and nine parts of water. Mix the two in a bucket and put the rusty tools in it. These may need some time and in some cases for weeks before they are cleaned and removed. Once the tools are removed, wash them and dry them properly. The job will be done.

    Avoiding Rust

    A good way to prevent rust once you have cleaned your tools is to WD-40 after use. Keep the tools in a dry place and keep pieces of charcoal which also help in keeping rust away.
