How to Create an American 1940’s Hairstyle

So what was the 1940’s hair like? Neither messy, nor sleek/straight.! This decade portrayed women carrying flawlessly styled curls. The trend lasted for a decade and also remained in the 50s. The styles included peek-a-boo bangs and updos. Famous stars like Bette Davis and Rita Hayworth carried these looks hairstyles perfectly.

    Hot roller curls

    Applying hot rollers will give the most flawless and frizz free curls. After pulling out the hot rollers, the curls should be brushed very lightly. This will ensure that they become less stiff but do not get separated. Do not use mouse, instead use hairspray to hold them in place.

    Pin curls

    Some people find them a bit complicated. These curls had been very prominent then. Wash your hair and apply some settling lotion. Dry them a little, leaving them damp. Using a comb part the hair in sections; these can vary from 0.5 inch to 1.5 inch. Curl them in the appropriate direction so they end up that way in the final look. If you are only want the ends to be curled, work your way up from the sections below. Use your finger to wind the curls around them, making sure they aren’t twisted In the wrong direction. If you want more waves, roll the curls in a spiral with a pin. Use bobby pins to hold them in place. To avoid frizz, don’t roll them very tightly.

    Victory rolls

    These sweep from the face and are pinned on the top. For side reverse rolls: roll a strand of hair into a circle and pin it down. The hair should be curled in sections with a curling iron.  Using hair mousse will create a suppler look. With the help of a round brush, part your hair to the side. Put them in a pony so they dint disturb in making the rest of the hair style. Create volume in your hair by holding them tightly and using a comb to tease them. Make sections of your hair and tease each section so the hair is not flat. Now make victory rolls; starting from the back, make the roll and steadily move forward to imitate the old look.  Use bobby pins and some spray to keep the look in its place. This step should not be forgotten as it ensures that the curls d not open up. Make the same v-curls on the other side. Spray your head thoroughly with hair spray. To make it appear neat, use a round brush on the ends.  Apply hair cream to give it some shine.
