How to Increase Platelets

Platelets are small irregularly shaped cell fragments which do not have a nucleus. Also known as thrombocytes, platelets are natural source of growth factors. They circulate in mammals’ blood and are responsible for blood clotting.

In case the platelet count is too low then excessive bleeding can occur. On the other hand, excessive platelets can form blood clots which may cause stroke or blockage of blood vessels to other parts of the body.

There are abnormalities of platelets which cause platelets count to be low, high or malfunctioning of platelets. Some disorders also reduce the number of platelets e.g. heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) or thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) which causes clots instead of bleeding.
