You can take science, math, electronics and mechanical drawing courses in your high school to get the initial learning about the your field. If you don’t get a chance to study these courses in a high school, you can join a vocational school.

You can also consider taking up military training in the field of electricity as many Army and Navy programmes offer some tremendous training for the people who want to be electricians.

After getting the initial learning and training, you have to search for an institution which sponsors the apprenticeship programme. For instance, the programmes offered by the Training Committee or the National Electrical Contractors' Association and National Joint Apprenticeship, in which most of the aspirants take part. Moreover, the general programmes provide at least 144 hours of classroom instructions and around 8000 hours of on-the-job training during the four to five years of apprenticeship.
