It is compulsory to get the required license in order to become an education lawyer. The basic requirements to get the certification are the same as those mandatory for other kinds of attorneys. In order to become an education lawyer, you will have to complete a three-year post-graduate law school programme and after that you must pass the bar examination of your state. Besides, you also need to have a good social reputation.

First of all, it is very important for you to develop a good background in education during your undergraduate program. You must know that there is no proper pre-law programme (according to Law School Admission Council), but you can at least study courses like child development and educational theory in order to get the initial knowledge about the field of your interest which will surely help you a lot afterwards.

After completing your bachelor’s degree, you have to apply to a law school of your own choice. You should keep in mind that you will have to take the LSAT (Law School Admission Test) so as to qualify for the admission. Moreover, you will also have to provide the letters of recommendation along with the statement explaining your interest in education law.

During your law school programme, you should take courses which will provide you the basic knowledge which you require to practice the employment law. The main courses will include contracts, disability laws, torts, constitutional law, civil procedure, administrative law and employment law.

After one year of your law school programme, you will be eligible to do a clerkship at any law firm which you should do as it will provide you a practical exposure of your field. In addition, it will give the opportunity to create your professional network.

You will have to give the bar examination of your state, after passing your law school. There is a difference in the bar examination of each state (according to the National Conference of Bar Examiners). However, all the tests take 2 to 3 days to complete.
