How to Clean Diamond Earrings

Every woman loves diamonds, and some have various diamond ornaments ranging from rings to earrings to necklaces. However, these ornaments become dirty and lose their peculiar shine through frequent wearing. Cosmetic products like hand lotions, hair styling gels and sprays leave residues on your diamond jewellery, making the stone appear dull and lifeless. To keep your diamond jewellery sparkly and shiny, it is best to clean it regularly. Otherwise, these cosmetic products, together with everyday grime, can accumulate into a thick layer of slime on the back of your diamond, causing the stone to lose its lustre. You can easily clean the mild build up at home using some common household items, like dishwashing detergent, ammonia or glass cleaner.

Instructions

  • 1

    Glass cleaner

Spray a small quantity of glass cleaner on your pair of diamond earrings and gently scrub away the grime. Try to focus on the inner, hidden portions of the earrings where the residue tends to accumulate. Use a toothpick to reach these hidden areas between the metal prongs and the diamond. After rinsing off, wash your earrings under an excess of tap water. Dry them with a soft cloth.

    Ammonia

You can also use mild household chemicals, like ammonia, to cleanse off dirt from your diamond earrings. Mix ammonia in water in a 1 to 2 ratio, and soak the earrings in this concoction for 15 to 20 seconds. Take them out and scrub gently with a soft cloth. Use an abrasive cloth to dry the earrings off.

    Dishwashing detergents

If you want to avoid ammonia, then use a mild dishwashing detergent. Mix a liquid or powdered dishwashing detergent, whichever is available, in water and soak the earrings in it for 10 minutes. Remove them from the mixture and scrub with a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean the diamonds and the metal and remove any traces of grime. Rinse the earrings off under tap water and pat them dry with a soft cloth.

    Lest oil

Lest oil can also be used to clean the diamond jewellery. Soak your earrings in the oil for 15 to 20 seconds, cleanse them with a gentle brush and make them sparkle like new.

    Mild abrasive cloth

If the grime accumulated is a bit intense, then use a mild abrasive cloth while you dry your diamond after using any of the above methods.
