It can be extremely difficult to stop telemarketers from calling your house especially if you are living in a country like Canada, America or Australia. Common opinion is that no matter what you do, telemarketers will keep calling you. Keep in mind that there are thousands of companies and organisations promoting their products and services through telemarketing. Even if you are able to stop one company from calling your house, still there will be countless others who will keep on bombarding your telephone line with their telemarketing calls.

Over the past few years, most federal governments have started compiling a list of telephone numbers on which, by federal law, telemarketers are not allowed to call. This list is known as the National Do Not Call List or DNCL.
Register you telephone number on the National Do Not Call List. You can register your number by visiting the official website of the regulatory authority in your respective country. This service is free in most cases and you can register as many numbers as you like.

Chances are that telemarketers will keep calling you even after you have registered your number on the DNCL. In that case, be polite at first. Make the telemarketer calling you understand that you do not want to receive any more telemarketing calls.

You may consider purchasing a new telephone set. In new telephone sets, customers have an option to block calls from certain numbers. Ideally, you should consider blocking all calls from ‘Private Callers’ because most telemarketers call from private or unknown numbers.

Most governments have setup separate departments which regulate and enforce national laws related to telemarketing. As a final resort, contact the relative government department in your country and file a complaint with them. You will be required to provide some basic details about the telemarketing call such as name of the telemarketing company, their telephone number etc.
