How to Defrag a Computer Using Windows Xp

If your personal computer is getting slower day by day, there might be more than one reason behind it. A lot of times, we put too much burden on Hard Disk or RAM. The computer manufacturers suggest that each portion of the Hard Disk must have 200 MBs of free space. But it is always better to keep a space of 1 GB to let the system work properly. On the other hand, the viruses also affect the speed.

These are very simple issues and one can easily tackle them. However, there are some other things, which should be kept in mind for a smooth running of the computer. Whenever we install a program on Hard Disk, it occupies space in a non-contiguous way. Rearrange files on a contiguous pattern and this technique is called defragmentation.

Disk Defragmenter is a utility in Microsoft Windows, especially designed to speedup the system. For XP users, it is a very simple process. Just take a few easy steps and defrag your computer as soon as possible.

Instructions

  • 1

Go to ‘My Computer’ and determine which partition you want to defragment. It is good to start with C drive, as it carries all the program files.

  • 2

Right click on the drive you want to defrag, and select properties.

  • 3

A new small window will pop up, having plenty of options, like Disk Cleanup. Look at top of the window, where you will find five different options, such as General, Tools, Hardware, Sharing, and Quota. Select Tools.

  • 4

There are two major options in this menu, Check Now, and Defragment Now. Click on the second one.

  • 5

Now you have a separate Defragment page right in front of you. The window will show all available partitions alongside their details. Before clicking on ‘Defragment’ at bottom of the page, make sure you have selected the correct partition.

Click on drive, and it will be highlighted that means that you have accurately selected the drive. Push the button, and the procedure will automatically start.

It may take several minutes, depending on the size of your hard drive. Disk Defragment will describe the entire procedure in details. The portion in green colour are unmoveable files, whereas the while portion is for the free space.

Once the defragmentation is done, the computer will come up with a message to confirm. Use the same procedure to defrag all your partitions.
