How to Create a Sauna Environment in a Bathroom

People have been using saunas since the beginning of time to treat congestion and relieve muscle aches and body pains. A sauna is typically a small room with both wet and dry mechanisms of producing heat.

Saunas originated in Finland and are today being used almost all over the world. In a sauna session the participant gets undressed and sits or lies down in temperatures between 70 to 100 degrees Celsius (158 to 212 degrees Fahrenheit). A traditional sauna consists a wood fire, heating a pile of rocks (kiuas) to a very high temperature in a wooden room (usually made up of cedar). Once the stones are almost red hot, water is thrown over them to produce steam and give a sensation of increased heat. This steam creates a deep cleansing environment, allowing you to cleanse your entire body.

Many spas and gyms offer sauna facilities, but they can be quite expensive. If you don’t have the resources to construct a sauna in your home and can’t afford going to a spa or fitness club to experience the soothing warmth and moisture of steam either, then create a sauna-like environment in your bathroom and enjoy the benefits of a sauna treatment.

Things Required:

– Hot water
– Bath tub
– Towel
– Wet Washcloth

Instructions

  • 1

To create your own sauna at home, choose the smallest bathroom, since it is easy to trap the steam and heat better in a small place than the large one.

  • 2

Close the doors to the bathroom and cover the windows properly to make your bathroom as air tight as possible. If there are any cracks in the doors or windows from where steam can escape, cover them with towels and heavy drapes. Make sure you also cover the crack at the bottom of the door using towels.

  • 3

Wash and drain your bath tub, plug it and turn on the boiling hot water. In the meantime close your shower curtains to trap maximum amount of heat and steam to create a sauna atmosphere.

  • 4

Turn off the water after your bath tub is half full.

  • 5

Sit next to the tub and enjoy the heat and steam filled in the bathroom for 15-20 minutes. Use a wet washcloth to cool your skin when needed.

  • 6

Follow up the sauna experience with a lukewarm shower. This will gradually lower your body temperature.
