How to Declaw a Cat Yourself

Most cat owners will be well aware of the fact that their cats tend to go on and scratch just about anything they can find.

Cats naturally try to sharpen and clean their claws, and they do this by scratching away at anything they can find around the house.

In order to overcome this, some cat owners consider the possibility of declawing their cats. However, what most cat owners fail to realize is that there is a big difference between clipping your cats nails, and declawing them.

Declawing cats nails is illegal in most countries, and the appropriate way to decrease the length of your cats nails is to trim them periodically.

Get cat used to paws being felt

The first thing that you need to do before you can start clipping your cats nails, is to slowly but surely get it used to having its paws felt. Do this by scratching and feeling its paws, every time you go on and scratch the cat or interact with it.

This is going to get it used to having its paws felt and consider paw touches to be a rather normal thing over a period of time. If you don’t get your cat used to this, you could have a big problem on your hands later on.

    Prepare yourself

Now before you can get the cats claws trimmed, you need to realize that you must have everything ready before hand. This is because you are going to be given a very small window of opportunity to clip the nails and you want to make just about every second count.

So keep all your clipping tools with you and make sure you have ample light turned on so that you can easily see what you are about to do.

    Clip

Once you have everything in place, grab your cat as you normally would when you are to scratch it. Now start playing with its paws and extend the nails on one paw. Now grab your clippers and slowly start clipping away at the nails. One nail at a time would do the trick, as long as you don’t startle the cat.

Clip the nails to the point where they start to curve and try not to over clip, since it could result in the cats nails bleeding.

You may have to go through a number of sittings with your cat, before you end up clipping the nails on all the paws.
