Driving a truck is full of adventure but at the same time it is not at all an easy job. You have to keep your eyes more than just wide open to ensure that nothing goes wrong. Since the trucks are driven on highways mostly so a slight mistake from the driver can prove to be extravagantly disastrous. Nevertheless, as a dump truck driver, you can find some lucrative heavy duty driver jobs in almost every part of the world. However, the very first thing you need to make sure is that you know how to actually drive a dump truck as it is no way same as driving a car on the road.

Instructions

  • 1

As you are seated, adjust the mirror to ensure that you have a good view to the back of the truck bed and the seat in a way that you have easy access to all gears and pedals.

  • 2

Keep your feet on the clutch and brake pedals while starting the truck and start off putting the shifter in the first gear.

  • 3

Slowly release the clutch as you apply pressure on the gas pedal. Shift the truck into second gear as it gains some momentum then into third when it reaches 10 or 15 mph.

  • 4

Be informed that the fourth gear is normally required while driving on highways around 35 mph or more otherwise it is fine to drive around 30 mph.

  • 5

As a safety precaution, always ensure that the bed of the truck is fully down before you drive because accidents can happen when you raise the bed and any low hanging wires come in contact.

  • 6

To vacate the bed, bring it on a steep road or hill in such a way that the front of the truck pointed upwards while the tailgate is unhooked.  This will empty any remaining load in the truck’s bed.

  • 7

It is also advised to drive fractionally below speed limit because the design of a dump truck may not bear any sharp turns.
