How to File Late Taxes

If you are an American citizen and fall within the tax net, you can file late taxes, in case you have missed the deadline of April 15 for any reason. A similar option can certainly be available for taxpayers in other countries, but check about it well in advance with your tax authorities. It is always a good idea that do not miss the deadline without genuine reasons. For example, you are out of your country for a longer period of time or had any major emergency.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has separate forms for filing of late taxes and the taxpayers can file the taxes without having any trouble with the tax authorities. You must be aware that April 15 of each year is the final date for filing taxes for the period of past year, and if you have not, either download the relevant information and form from IRS website or contact them on their hotline to get the form mailed at your address.

You will just need to fill out the form and explain the reason why you could not file for taxes before the deadline, and your application gets as much attention as your filing will do in case of timely filing of taxes.

    Determine Your Tax Status

    Whether you are a business or an individual tax payer, you should determine status and fill out the form accordingly. All taxpayers are treated by IRS according to their tax status. So be sure which category you fall within before filing.

    Get Relevant Form

    If you are an American business and have missed the tax filing deadline, you will need 7004 form for late filing. An individual will require 4868 form and if you are an individual and were out of country you will be in need for 2350 form.

    You can either download these forms directly from website of IRS or contact them on their helpline to get the form you need posted to your address.

    Fill Out Form As Instructed

    You should fill out the form for late tax filing as per instructions with it. Do not left any section blank or do not provide vague information. This can result in turning down of your form and you will require to repeat the process once again.

    Post Your Form To IRS

    After you have filled out the form and enclosed all required documents, send it to the IRS at their postal address and then wait for processing of it. If you have carefully filled out form, there should not be any problem for you to get it accepted and processed.

    Pay Due Taxes

    You should not delay paying of taxes that are due on your income. If you delay the payment due taxes, it will also delay your tax filing processing process. So better pay all tax without further delay.
