How to Make a Stained Glass Heart

A quick and easy craft for Valentine’s Day, a stained glass heart makes for a pretty and personalised Valentine’s present. The heart takes less than an hour to make, although children will require adult supervision if they wish to try their hand at making one.

Things Required:

– Valentine colored crayons (red, pink)
– 2 large sheets of waxed paper
– 2 paper grocery sacks
– Iron
– Ironing board
– A pair of scissors
– Fine-tipped permanent marker
– Pencil sharpener

Instructions

  • 1

Begin by making the “stained glass”. Firstly, remove the wrappers of all your crayons. In order to go with the Valentine’s theme, make sure these are of an appropriate colour – varying shades of red and pink will be perfect.

Once you have removed the crayon wrappings, spread out a large sheet of waxed paper. Now use the pencil sharpener to sharpen the crayons over the waxed paper, so the shavings fall in one place.

After all the crayons have been reduced to shavings via the pencil sharpener, spread the shavings out all over the waxed paper, making a thin layer. However, be sure to leave a 2 inch-border of plain waxed paper around the edges.

Now it is time to turn this into stained glass. Spread a flat paper grocery sack on top of the ironing board. Then lay out the waxed paper with the shavings on top of the paper grocery sack and spread the second plain sheet of waxed paper over this. Finally, cover all this with the second flattened paper grocery sack.

Next, heat the iron to medium heat – be very careful with this step, and handle hot objects with care. Slowly and gently press the iron onto the top of the paper sack, and begin pressing and running it all over the paper, until all of the crayon shavings sandwiched within the layers of paper have melted.

Once the ironing is done, set the waxed paper aside, and allow it to cool completely. Once it has cooled, proceed to cut a heart out of the paper, which should now have a stained glass effect. If you trust your hands and artistic ability, simply cut the heart out using the scissors – if not, use a large heart-shaped cookie cutter as a template. If you have leftover stained glass paper, you can also cut out multiple hearts.

Finally, after the heart has been cut out, proceed to write a special message on it with a fine-tipped permanent marker, and present it to your loved one.
