How to Serve in Tennis Step by Step

Tennis is one of the most popular racket games played around the globe domestically and internationally. It is usually played between two players or between two teams of two players each.

There are eight basic shots used by any competent tennis player, but the most important in these shots is serving. It is used to start a point, and initiated by tossing the ball upwards in the air and then hitting it perfectly into the diagonally opposite service box.

Andy Roddick, Pete Sampras, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and several others are some of the renowned players that mastered the art of serving clinically.

Many amateurs believe that serving is one of the most difficult shots in tennis, but in reality, one can easily learn the art perfectly, and then master it with the passage of time by practicing regularly.

The foremost aspect of serving is the stance. Stand sideways behind the baseline in such a manner that your ball tossing arm is towards the net while your front foot is pointing forward. Hold the ball lightly with your fingertips. Bring your hand with the ball towards your racket, as it will help you to line up your serve.

Now shift your weight slightly backwards, drop your racket-head downwards, and then bring your racket behind your back in an arc-like motion. Meanwhile, toss the ball upwards in front of you. Bring the racket slightly up and bend your elbow in such a manner that you are like scratching your back.

When the ball starts to drop, bring the racket-head up to hit the ball with as much power as you can while ensuring that you remain in complete control of your shot. Make sure that you hit the ball swiftly. At the last moment while hitting, tilt your racket-head with the help of your wrist’s jerk a bit downwards to make sure that the ball lands inside the opposite serve box in the court. The follow-through of your racket will end up near your feet.
