Most of the holidays in Chile are religion based, as the local populace is mostly Catholic Christian. The region also takes pride in its history with holidays celebrated to commemorate the army and the navy.

Holidays in January
1st - New Year’s Day
Like in every other country of the world, the New Year’s Day is an official holiday declared by the state. Nearly all of the commerce and industrial activity is put to a halt with an exception of hospitals and major grocery stores. -

Holidays in March
29th - Good Friday
It’s a Christian religious holiday commemorating the cruxification of Jesus Christ. The term ‘good’ is linked with the day to significance it’s holy importance, rather than the happenings of the event.
30th - Holy Saturday
It’s another day that is linked with the death of Jesus Christ after his cruxification. The holiday is announced to honour Jesus Christ and his efforts to save mankind while giving up his own worldly life. The two days (29 & 30 May) are both official state holidays. -

Holidays in May
1st - Labour Day
The Labour Day is an official holiday in the country, which is also implied in most of the nations around the world. The holiday is declared to honour the working community, with most of the industries, banks and other commerce centres being closed on this day.
21st - Navy Day
The May 21 was declared as an official holiday to commemorate the sailors that died fighting for their country in the Battle of Iquique. The battle was fought between the Chilean and Peruvian Navy in 1879, in which the latter defeated the Chileans. -

29th - Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul
It’s to commemorate and honour the death of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Rome, who were killed by the ordered of the Republic. It’s also a national holiday. -

16th - Our Lady of Mount Caramel
The holiday was established in 2007, and has replaced the Corpus Christi since its commemoration. The day is celebrated to honour the Virgin Mary for her role as the patroness of the Carmelite Order. -

It’s the commemoration of the moment when the people of Chile declared their independence. Most offices and educational institutions declare an entire of holidays for celebrating the Independence Day.
19th - Army Day
It’s an official holiday commemorated to honour the military forces for their services in the name of protecting the country and its citizens by laying down their lives in the pursuit of doing it so. -

25th - Christmas Day
As a Christian state, the government declares Christmas as an official holiday. The day is full of festivities for the local populace, as families and friends get together to celebrate the birth of Christ.
