Norway, officially the Kingdom of Norway, is a Scandinavian country having a population of around 5 million.  There are several public and national holidays in the country with each day having some specific significance.

    Holidays in January

    1st - New Year's Day

    New Year's Day is also known as Første nyttårsdag in Norway. People from all across the country celebrate the first day of Gregorian year with great enthusiasm. People go out clubbing and special cultural shows are arranged on this day. This day holds special significance for the younger generation as they enjoy late night parties and hang out with their friends. New Year’s Day is also very important for people in relationship as there is a trend in the country that couples take vows about the year ahead and make their New Year resolutions.

    28th – Maundy Thursday

    Maundy Thursday is also known as Skjærtorsdag in regional languages. It is a public holiday and is observed country wide without any discrimination. It is the Thursday before Easter Sunday and people, especially from Christian religion, celebrate this day with great respect.

    29th – Good Friday

    Good Friday or Langfredag holds a very important place in the hearts of Norwegian people. It is a public holiday and people observe this day with great respect and share gifts.

    31st – Easter Sunday

    It is one of the most anticipated days in Norway. Easter Sunday, also known as EastFørste påskedag is observed by each and everyone no matter what race or religion he belongs to. It is a special day for kids and as it is a public holiday, people travel to visit their relatives and share gifts.

    1st – Easter Monday

    It is the first Monday after Easter and is known as Andre påskedag in the region. Just like Easter Sunday, this day is also very important in Norwegian history and is observed with great enthusiasm and respect.

    1st – Labour Day

    Labour Day is known as Første mai in local language. It is an international holiday and is observed with great respect in Norway as well.

    9th - Ascension Day

    This day comes after the 40 days of Easter and it is also observed country wide. In Norway it is known as Kristi himmelfartsdag.

    17th – Constitution Day

    Constitution Day or Syttende mai or Grunnlovsdagen is observed to commemorate the constitution of the country.

    20th – Whit Monday

    Andre pinsedag is the 7th Monday after Easter and is also Known as Pentecost Monday.

    25th – Christmas Day

    Første Juledag is observed in Norway on 25th of December and it is one of the most awaited days of the year.

    26th – Boxing Day

    It’s the day after Christmas and people travel to their relatives and enjoy family dinners.
