Malaysia is a country of great cultural and religious diversity since its formation. Due to its diverse nature, the country observes various holidays including religious holidays of different faiths.

    1st – New Year’s Day

    This day marks the start of New Year according to the Gregorian calendar. It’s an official holiday in all states except Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis & Terengganu.

    24th – Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday

    It’s a national holiday that commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) in accordance with the Islamic Lunar calendar.

    27th – Thaipusam

    It’s declared as an official holiday only in the state of Kuala Lumpur, Patrajaya, Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Penang and Selangor.

    Holidays in February


    10, 11 & 12th – Chinese New Year

    It’s a series of national holidays that are celebrated in all of the states. The date of this event is subject to change every year with respect to the Chinese calendar.

    Holidays in March


    29th – Good Friday

    This date marks the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and is of great importance to the Christian communities in the region. It’s declared as an official holidays only in the states of Sarawak and Sabah.

    1st – Labour Day

    Most of the industries, banks and schools are closed on the International Worker’s Day to commemorate the achievements of works all around the globe.

    24th – Vesak Day

    It’s a Buddhist religious day marks the Birthday of Buddha.

    30th – Harvest Festival

    This date marks the final harvest of the season in the region. It’s declared as an official holiday in the states of Sabah and Labuan.

    1st – Agong’s Birthday

    It marks the birthday of the local monarch and is therefore observed as a holiday in all of the states.

    9th – Awal Ramadan

    This day marks the start of the Holy month of Ramadan for the Muslims, which is an important occasion for the Islamic community. The date is subject to change every year, as it’s based on the Islamic Lunar Calendar. It’s declared as an official holiday only in the states of Johor, Kedah and Melaka.

    26th – Nuzul Al-Qur’an

    The date is subject to change every year, as it’s based on the Islamic Lunar Calendar. It’s observed as a holiday in the states of Kelantan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Penang, Selangor and Terengganu.

    8 & 9th – Hari Raya Puasa

    It’s also known as the Eid-ul-Fitr or the Lesser Feast that is observed just after the end of Ramadan. It’s based on the Islamic Lunar Calendar, therefore subjected to change every year. It’s a national holiday, celebrated in all states of Malaysia.

    16th – Malaysia Day

    This date commemorates the establishment of the state of Malaysia in 1963.

    15 & 16th – Hari Raya Haji

    This date marks the Great Feast for the Islamic community, as they sacrifice livestock in the name of God. It’s a national holiday, celebrated in all states of Malaysia. The date is subjected to change every year, being based on Islamic Lunar Calendar.

    3rd – Deepavali

    This date marks the Holy Festival of Devali for the Hindu community and is declared as an official holiday in all states except Sarawak.

    5th – Awal Muharram

    This day marks the start of Islamic New Year. The date is subject to change as it’s based on the Islamic New Year.

    25th – Christmas Day

    Christmas is also a state declared holiday which is observed in all states of Malaysia.
