How to Treat a Septic Wound

Some wounds heal quickly without any special care or treatment, while others develop an infection and take much longer than normal to heal. An infection actually occurs when bacteria enters into an open wound and start growing in favourable conditions. Symptoms of an infection include redness around the wound, increased swelling, severe pain accompanied by fever and presence of pus. If you have developed an infection in a wound or cut, you should treat it immediately.

Things Required:

– Wash cloth
– Cotton balls
– Warm water
– Salt
– Antiseptic
– Cotton bandage
– Cotton ball
– Liquid Antibiotics

Instructions

  • 1

    Clean the wound

Clean your wound thoroughly. Mix one teaspoon of table salt in two cups of warm water. Dip a wash cloth in the salt and water solution and clean the area around the septic wound. Salt is a natural antiseptic and will kill the bacteria in the wound. If a scab has developed over your wound, do not remove it. If there is pus under the scab, carefully apply very little pressure to squeeze it. Extract any remaining grime using sterilized tweezers. After thoroughly cleaning the septic wound, apply some antiseptic (hydrogen peroxide) on top of it using a cotton ball.

    Dress the septic wound

It is recommended not to dress an infected wound unless there are pathogens flying around in the air. To dress the wound, apply liquid antibiotic on a cotton ball and place it on the wound. Using a cotton bandage, fix the cotton ball on the top of the wound. Wrap the cotton bandage loosely but properly and secure it using some tape.

    Oral medication

If your wound is really serious you may also need to take some antibiotics to speed up the healing process. However, it is recommended to consult a doctor before taking antibiotics.

  • 4

    Check Bandage

Make sure to check the bandage everyday to ensure that the wound is healing properly. If you notice anything unusual like discolouration or seepage coming from the wound then try the steps again to properly clean your infection.
