How to Obtain Your Learner’s Permit in California

Most American teenagers count the number of days till their 15th birthday, as they become eligible for the learner’s permit in most states by the age of 15. In California the age limit is 15 and one-half years. Getting a learner’s permit early allows you to drive under the guidance of a supervisor, and it helps polish your driving skills for getting a permanent license. To get a learner’s license in California, you will have to go through a small driving exam or test. Don’t worry the driving part of the test is fairly simple.

    The easiest way to get a leaner’s permit is to get enrolled in a driver education course in your high school. The subject is divided into two categories; the first one deals with the traffic laws and road signs, while the other one is related to the actual driving skills. On the successful completion of the course, you will get a Driver Education Student Certificate of Completion, mentioning that you have completed 20 hours of driving.

    If you are not confident about your preparation, there are a number of cheap online courses that help your prepare for the leaner’s permit driving test. Make an appointment with the local DMV authorities. Making the appointment online can save  time. You can also walk in directly and apply for the learner’s permit. In either case, you will have to provide a proof of identification. For verification of your date of birth, bring your Passport or Birth certificate. You should visit the DMV webpage for any other document that may suffice in case you do not have both.

    You will be asked to deposit a sum of $28 at the start of the test. There will be a vision test as well, so bring your glasses/ contact lenses along with you. The DMV authorities will also require written proof that you have successfully cleared  driver education in your high school.

    It is advised to arrive at the centre about 20 minutes before the stipulated time, particularly if you will fill the form at the office. Come prepared to take the traffic laws quiz and the vision tests. The traffic law test is a 30 minute test, which is based on computer. In the driving test, you will have to drive the vehicle around the city for about 10 minutes with a DMV official, who will gauge your driving skills during the journey.
