How to Practice In the Nets

Cricket is an extremely tough sport, requiring immense mental strength and outstanding physical fitness. It takes a youngster many years to polish his/her skills at different levels before he or she is ready to play at the highest stage of the game.

Net practice is a crucial component of a cricketer’s training. It allows the player to enhance his/her skills by experimenting with different methods and techniques. All great players give immense importance to net practice. However, if you want to become a professional cricketer, you should adopt a methodical approach while practicing in the nets.

Instructions

  • 1

    Practice facilities

Unless or until you have proper practice facilities in your club, you will never be able to make the most of net practice. The necessary facilities include properly rolled turf pitches, a net which thoroughly covers the pitch area and enough space to play freely.

On top of that, you also need some quality cricketers to practice with. This is the reason why choosing the right club for practice is crucial.

  • 2

    Keep yourself busy

If you take out three hours for net practice every day, you need to make the most of that time. Some players are too lazy to work hard and sit idle after having a bat/bowl in the net. If you are a batsman and are done with your batting turn in the net, you must involve yourself in fielding practice or physical training. Batsmen should try bowling when they are free. A young batsman can gain advantage over others, if he can become a handy part-time bowler.

  • 3

    Take practice seriously

When you are batting or bowling in the nets, you must take every ball seriously and consider it to be a real match situation. If you play rash shots in the net without worrying about getting out, you are likely to hamper your technique.

Most of the players become non-serious when they get tired. If you think that you have done enough practice for the day, it is better to call it off rather than playing without intent.

  • 4

    Set small goals

You should set small goals, like surviving a set number of overs without giving any chances. Similarly, the bowlers should look to bowl as less loose balls as possible.

  • 5

    Take help

While having a net, a youngster should always be keen to learn the game by seeking help from senior players.
