How to Treat Emphysema with Exercise

Having emphysema can make doing any type of exercise extremely difficult and often times quite painful as well. Damaged lung tissue puts massive strain on the respiratory system and this makes exercise almost impossible. Without the ability to breathe properly the body starts to suffer from fatigue fairly quickly. People that are suffering from emphysema can start a gentle exercise routine that can help them. If you or a loved one has emphysema, there are a few basic techniques that you can do to help treat this condition with exercise.

    Discuss with doctor:

It is of the utmost priority to first discuss with your doctor the possibility of doing some exercise if you are suffering from emphysema. He or she will be in the best position to guide you and help put together some basic exercise techniques that you can follow at home. Remember, emphysema directly impacts the cardiovascular and respiratory system so doing any type of exercise needs to be done under the care of your doctor.

    Do exercise at home:

If it is difficult for you to get around due to your emphysema then do your exercise routine at home. It is also a good idea to have a friend or family member with you while you are exercising to ensure that nothing goes wrong. Having a reduced lung capacity due to emphysema can make it very difficult to exercise properly, so try to avoid the gym or going on lengthy walks outside.

    Start slow:

Remember to start off slow as this helps your body get used to physical activity. The body needs the lungs but unfortunately emphysema creates a whole host of problems to your respiratory system. Take your time and exercise at a pace that is suitable for you to handle. Once you get used to a particular pace then you can gradually increase your exercise routine.

    Do not over do it:

Do not under any circumstance over do your exercise routine or push it too far. The goal is to gradually pick up the pace of your exercise to help the lungs and not to burn fat with a hardcore workout.

    Hire a trainer:

If your budget allows it then you can always hire a personal trainer that specialises in exercising with those that suffer emphysema. Always tell your trainer if you are feeling any pain or discomfort for his or her exercise routine.
