The first thing you need to do is to make sure your computer has an active Internet connection.

Open the web browser installed on your computer and visit the LinkedIn home-page. Either create a new account, or enter your e-mail address and password in the respective fields on the top-right corner if you already have an existing account to log in.

You will be able to view the information regarding your existing network once you log into your account. The page will also display alerts if you have received any new e-mails.

Locate and click the “People” tab on the page to start searching for people.

Clicking the “People” tab will take you to a new page, where you will be required to enter the first and last name of the person you are searching for in the “Name Search” field. Since LinkedIn has an extensive network, it is important to know the last name of the person you are searching for in order to successfully find him. Click the “Search” button to starting searching.

You can use the “Advanced Search” fields to find people belonging to a specific industry or part of the country conveniently. Using the “Advanced Search” feature can come in real handy when dealing with a name that is extremely common.

After the search results are displayed, click the name of the person you have selected to visit their abbreviated public profile. You can take a look at the basic information such as their job and current projects they are working on.

You can contact the person by hitting the “Contact Directly” button. You have an option of either sending the person an InMails or request an introduction.
