How to Make Pizza Dough from Scratch

While the tomato sauce, melted cheese, and toppings all play an important role in making a great pizza, none of it would be complete without the base – the pizza crust. Many prefer to forego the hassle and just buy ready-made pizza crust, or pizza dough from the store, but making your own dough and crust from scratch can be far more satisfying and delicious, not to mention astonishingly easy.

Prep time: 10 min
Cook time: 20 min
Total time: 30 min
Yield: 1 – 12 inch pizza crust
Utensils: Bowl, wooden oven, rolling pin, water jar

Ingredients:
Package active dry yeast: 1 (.25 ounce)
White sugar: 1 teaspoon
Warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C): 1 cup
Bread flour: 2 1/2 cups
Olive oil: 2 tablespoons
Salt: 1 teaspoon

Instructions

  • 1

Start by preheating your oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Traditional Italian pizza is baked in wooden ovens with astonishing temperatures, so make sure yours is nice and hot by the time you are ready to slide your pizza in.

  • 2

While the oven is heating, start working on your pizza dough. Take a medium-sized bowl, and pour in the warm water. Add your sugar and yeast to this, stir it until they are dissolved, and let the bowl stand until the mixture inside becomes creamy, both visually, and in actual consistency – this should take roughly 10 minutes.

  • 3

After this is done, add flour, salt and oil in the mixture, and stir them in until the entire thing is completely and smoothly mixed. This is your dough, and it will now need to rest for around 5 minutes, to allow the yeast, and the rest of the ingredients to blend together.

  • 4

Once the dough has had time to rest, it is ready to be made into pizza crust. Lightly flour the surface you plan to roll the crust out on, and tip the dough out onto this. It will be fairly soft so you can either pat it flat and make it into a round, or use a rolling pin for this purpose.

Transfer the rolled out crust onto a pizza pan that has been lightly greased (use olive oil to give it maximum flavour), spread it with sauce, toppings, and cheese and slide it into the oven to bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or however long it takes for the crust to develop a golden brown colour. Take it out of the oven, allow it to sit for 5 minutes, and then slice it up and serve.
