How to Put Music on Your IPod Using Ubuntu

Windows is without any doubt the most common operating system as far as home computers are concerned. Apple’s Mac is also rapidly growing in popularity, along with the Linux operating system Ubuntu.

While both Windows and Mac allow iPod owners to easily transfer music from their computer to their Apple device through iTunes, the programme is not compatible with the Linux operating system.

Ubuntu, however, has kept the task of transferring music to iPod really simple, much to the relief of Apple-enthusiasts who prefer to run the fast and secure Linux operating system on their computer instead of Windows and Mac.

The first thing you need to do is to connect your iPod to your computer using the USB data cable that came with it. Plug one end of the cable into the iPod, while the other end of the cable should be plugged into a free USB slot on your computer. Make sure that your Apple music device is switched on.

After you have connected the iPod to the computer, wait for a few seconds as Ubuntu recognises the device. If you are using a version of Ubuntu that is older than 10.04, your iPod will be recognised as a storage device instead of an MP3 player. To avoid any unnecessary complications, make sure you have the latest version of Ubuntu installed on your computer. Not only will the newer version of the Linux operating system be faster, it will also have greater compatibility with your devices and software.

Once Ubuntu recognises the device attached to the computer in the first step as an MP3 player, it will automatically load the “Music Player” application.

  • 4

In the “Music Player” window, locate and click on the “Music” tab.

  • 5

From the drop-down menu, select “Import File” to import the music into your library.

  • 6

Navigate to the folder on your hard disk where the music you want to transfer to your iPod is saved. Drag and drop it to your Apple music player’s icon, which will have your device’s name on it right under the “Devices” heading. Every time you drag and drop a music file on the icon, the iPod will update automatically.

After you are finished loading the music of your choice on your iPod, exit the “Music Player” application and right-click on the iPod icon located on the desktop. Select “Eject” from the context menu. Wait for a few seconds until Ubuntu notifies you that your device has been disconnected from the computer. Once the message is displayed, unplug your iPod and start enjoying the music on the move.
