How to Plant a Flowering Cherry Tree
Planting a flowering cherry tree in your backyard is a great idea if you like lively flowers and tasty fruit. This fruit bearing flowering tree is famous for its peculiar blooming season and in most of Asian countries it is liked more for its magnificent bloom than its fruit. Planting a flowering cherry tree is not much different from planting any other tree, but there are few things you should consider when planting this fruit bearing flowering tree.

Select the variety
Select the appropriate variety of cherry tree according to your region's climate. If you are living in a cold climate (planting zones 4 through 8) autumn cherry is the right choice, while the other verities grow well in zones from 5 to 9. -

Find a location
After having decided the variety, choose a spot for your flowering cherry tree. The best location for such trees is a spot outside, near the house, that receives plenty of sunlight and has a proper drainage system. You can also plant a flowering cherry tree in your backyard, but make sure it has plenty of room to grow (these trees tend to have large spreads of almost 20 ft). -

Prepare the soil
Flowering cherry tree needs well drained rich soil for optimal growth. If your soil does not drain well, add some sand to make sure it allows good drainage. Also add some compost to improve the richness of your soil. Different varieties of cherry trees require different pH level. Check with the nearest nursery to find which pH level is best for the plant you have chosen. -

Plant your flowering cherry tree
Dig a hole about 4 to 5 feet deep and 4 feet wide, if you have a well grown tree. For a small tree, 4 by 3 dimensions will be fine. Place the tree in the centre of the hole and fill half of the hole with the soil mixture. Fill the hole with water using a garden hose. Let the water soak into the soil and then fill the rest of the hole with soil. Once you finish filling the hole, pat down the soil firmly. -

Water your cherry tree
After having properly planted your flowering cherry tree, water the plant well. Water the newly planted tree every two days for the first two weeks, and then thrice a week. After a month or two, reduce watering to once a week, but it should be done generously (for about 10 minutes). Keep the soil moist, but not wet between watering. -

Cover soil with mulch
Cover the soil with mulch one month after plating the flowering cherry tree. However, ensure it doesn't touch the stem.
