The first step in creating a children’s book and later going on to sell it is to create a theme based around a plot. The plot needs to have a character, a problem for the character to solve, the character solving the problem and a happy ending. This is a children’s book, a happy ending is a must. The theme itself can be based on any plot but it needs to have settings. Does it take place in a forest, an urban area, in a room or in a magical land. Remember to carefully draw out your plot and discuss with others to make sure that it is appropriate for the target age group.

Once that is done, design the characters that will be in the book. The hero, heroine or both need to be eye catching and we don’t mean in a wolf-whistle kind of way. The villain needs to look evil but not terrifying. A touch of scary isn’t a bad thing. Make sure characters have a lovable quality about them which children can assimilate with. This will make your characters popular and interesting to the young readers.

  • 3

Never kill a character but rather make sure that they ‘see the light’ and mend their ways. Keep your theme and characters positive to provide children with a sense of adventure and mystery as well.

  • 4

Make the story educational and fun at the same time. Throw in numbers and alphabets and maybe sums for older children. Educational books are the new trend. Be sure to get the input from kids while your are making an educational book, as they are the best judge when it comes to deciding what is fun at a particular age group.

  • 5

Ensure that you specify which age group the book is tailored for as parents have become very picky and specific when it comes to these things. Always remember to write according to the age group and make sure everything is appropriate for that particular demographic.

  • 6

Send your proposals to various publishers, whether they are small or large. You should get some feedback from them which will help you further improve your product. Be patient for a response as it can take some time before hearing anything from a publisher.
