How to Floss With Braces without Floss Threaders

Dental hygiene is essential for good health and you need to be extra conscious about oral hygiene when you are wearing braces. The two basic techniques to keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy are brushing and flossing. When wearing braces, both brushing and flossing become a bit difficult and tricky, especially if you are wearing permanent stainless steel or gold plated braces.

However, with a few simple steps you can easily clean your teeth and maintain good oral health. Flossing using Floss Threaders is the most common technique used to remove plaque and other debris in and around your teeth. However, if you don’t want to use Floss Threader, waterpik flossing is an option. Waterpik is not as common as brushing and dental flossing are, but it is also an effective way to preserve your oral health. In this technique, high pressure of water is used to remove plaque and other debris from the gum line and in between the teeth.

Things Required:

– Waterpik
– Water
– Sink

Instructions

  • 1

Fill the base of your waterpik with lukewarm water (room temperature water will also work).

  • 2

Adjust water pressure of your apparatus. Start with minimum pressure and turn it up a bit once you get used to waterpik flossing.

  • 3

Lean over the sink and place the pipe of the waterpik in your mouth, near your teeth. Press the 'on' button to allow the water to flow.

  • 4

Spray water on your gum line with the waterpik. Focus on the areas between the teeth and linger for a moment when flossing between each tooth.

  • 5

It is better to close your lips around the waterpik pipe; this will keep water from splashing. Don’t keep water in your mouth, let it leak into the sink.

  • 6

Once you are done, just turn the waterpik off and spit out any remaining water.

  • 7

Rinse your mouth with a cup of water.
