Have you ever tried driving a kick scooter? It seems quite similar to a motorbike, but there is a big difference in both. The controls are different and it is quite difficult to balance a scooter comparatively. These scooters require a kick start – literally – and doing that can become quite tricky and time taking if you don’t know the right technique. 1
Know the difference
First of all, you should be aware of the basic differences between a motorbike and a scooter. The latter has the gearbox in your left hand whereas the bike has those controls, where your left foot rests. Moreover, the scooter’s engine is placed in the right rear side, which makes it difficult to balance while in standstill mode. -
2
Age limit
You have to be 18 years or above in order to get a license for a scooter. If you are younger than that, you should not practice it at all because you may end up hurting someone and get in trouble. -
3
Wear your protective gear
Just like driving a bike, you need to protect yourself while riding a scooter. So, make sure you have the complete set of protective gear, so that you can avoid serious injuries. Remember that a helmet is the most important tool whether you are on a motorbike or scooter, as it saves you from head injuries in case of an accident. -
4
Kick start the scooter
You will find the kick at the right side of your scooter. It is slightly different to a motorbike, so try not to kick start the scooter while sitting on it. Once you become an expert, you can try that too, especially if you are in a hurry. Otherwise, it is better to hold the scooter with both hands, while standing on the right side and then hit the kick. -
5
Go into the first gear
Once the engine has started, sit on it and go into the first gear, using your left hand. Press the clutch and roll your fist slightly upwards to get into drive mode. Just like a motorbike, release the clutch slowly and increase acceleration. -
6
Shift to other gears
You can now shift to higher gears by rolling your fist downwards. You will see the gear indication right besides your left hand, so you will get a clear idea of things. -
7
Go to neutral mode
When you have reached your destination, go to neutral mode and stop the engine.
