How to Pack Paintings for Transport

Paintings are a work of art. Their value is far greater than the canvas they are built upon and the paint that goes on them. It is the genius of the mind and the stroke of the wrist which makes them so valuable. Whether it is your own painting or one you have bought, you obviously want to keep it with yourself for a long time. Transportation creates a hassle that can damage the painting. Therefore it is important to pack them in a way that the painting is secure and has a cushion from any friction and accident. You need to know the basics about painting packaging so that you do not lose something this valuable in transit.

Things Required:


– Glassine paper
– Bubble wrap
– Packing tape
– Corrugated cardboard pieces
– Foam board
– Cardboard box
– Permanent marker

    Mark your name and address on the back of the painting to claim your ownership.

    Lay the painting on a flat surface. Place the glassine paper on the top of the painting. The paper should be acid free so that there is no risk of any corrosion. The paper protects the painting from any moisture to retain its originality.

    Take the bubble wrap and cover the whole of the painting with it. The bubble wrap provides the painting with a cushion against any drop and accident. Use a tape to secure the wrap so that it does not give away during transport.

    Place the pieces of the corrugated cardboard on each side of the painting. The cardboard sheets give strength to the painting. Add another layer of bubble wrap around the painting. The dual layer will bring in an extra level of cushion.

    Now place the painting carefully inside the cardboard box designated for transport. Try to get a box that fits the painting snugly so that it remains in place and does not bounce around which will damage it.

    If you want to take all precautions, order a custom wood crate that fits the size of the painting. This will secure the painting. However, the box should not any protruded nails or joints which can damage the painting.

    Place a sticker on the box with your name and address and so of the receiver.
