You may start riding it with some basic knowledge, and it is better to start with a single gear bike. As you grow in the skills and control, you may start riding a bike with multiple gears. Since dirt bikes are meant to be ridden through different terrains off the road, controlling them in different situation needs perfection of skills, great judgement level and at least basic knowledge of bikes. 1
Starting Dirt Bike
Starting a dirt bike is different to other bikes. First of all you will have to pull the clutch on the left lever of the handlebar and hold it, while you start your bike. Even before starting, make sure your bike is full with fuel and pressure in both tyres is perfect. It helps you to better protect your bike and yourself. -
2
Wear Helmet Other Safety Equipment
Make sure you wear helmet before starting your bike. It is even more important than riding the bike on the road, since you will be riding the bike through difficult and rough terrains, and your safety should be paramount to you. Do not ride the bike without protective gear. -
3
Rolling Forward
Do not leave clutch after starting the bike. Instead, press downward the shifter arm with left foot and loose the clutch slowly and smooth. This will allow your bike to roll on gradually. Do not leave the clutch at once, as this will make the bike jump off the front wheel and you are most likely to fall on the ground. This also makes the bike difficult to control and you end up hitting anything hard that can cause an injury to you and damage your bike. -
4
Continue Riding
If you are able to release the clutch slowly and smoothly, you are most likely to let the bike roll on and then gradually increase the speed a bit. Try to ride the bike first at a reasonable speed that it keeps it stable and moving and as you develop your confidence gradually increase the speed. -
5
Controlling Bike in Multiple Gears
With a bit of practice on a daily basis you will be able to better control your bike and thus be able to change gears. To change a gear you will need to pull back the clutch and hold it while releasing the speed handle bar, again releasing clutch gradually to allow the bike to pick up the speed. Move from smaller gears to larger one, but if the place you are riding the bike is too rough do not ride the bike in great speed.
