How to Apply Makeup for a Natural Look

Makeup done for everyday purposes, or for a daytime look, is best when applied in muted shades, for a natural, toned-down look. This can be a great look for work, or for a casual afternoon meeting with friends. The same look can be intensified for a more glamorous evening look. The key to creating a natural look is to make sure you stick to products that are close to the colour of your skin tone, and use pure, earthy, and discreet shades.

Instructions

Start by hydrating your face. Wash it with a good facial cleanser, pat it dry, and then apply a good amount of moisturiser. Then, proceed to apply primer all over your face and neck – this will prepare your skin for the concealer and foundation that will follow, increase the longevity of your makeup, and minimise your pores.

Next, use concealer on the problem areas of your face – these might be blemishes, scars, or dark under-eye circles. Make sure the concealer is of a shade that is close to your natural skin tone – yellow-based concealers work best for almost all skin shades and types. Dab it gently onto the problem areas, and pat it with the tips of your fingers until it is absorbed into your skin.

Now, apply your foundation – again, this should be of a shade that matches your natural skin tone exactly. The point of foundation is to smooth and even out your skin, and make it appear natural, balanced, and flawless, so do not cake on layer upon layer. Smooth it over your face, and blend it into your neck – the right foundation will seem to disappear on your face.

Next, sweep on a subtle amount of blush. This should be of a natural shade which goes well with your skin – the point is to make your cheeks look like they are flushed with a healthy glow. Depending on your skin type, you can select pink, rosy shades, or go for the peach and coral varieties. To apply, smile, then use a blush brush to sweep the colour onto the apples of your cheeks, and blend it back up towards the hairline. Use a subtle amount.

Once this is done, you can work on your eyes. Select eye shadows that are natural in shade – earthy shades like beige, muted gold, and brown will work best. Blend these into your eyelid with a brush, and then apply liner that is either brown or charcoal gray. Finally, to finish with the eyes, apply a brown or grey mascara, and comb through with a lash comb, to eliminate any blobs or clumps.

Lastly, do up your lips. Line them with a muted pencil liner to give them shape, and then fill them in with a subtle lipstick – again, use earthy tones, and top it off with some clear lip gloss. If you wish, you can skip the lipstick, and simply apply a neutral lip gloss to give your lips some shine. Your natural look is now complete.
