How to Change a Tire on a Forklift

Forklifts are commonly used in factories and constructions alike. The operators of forklifts know it very well that its tires need to be replaced periodically for proper working of the machine. These vehicles are used to lift heavy objects and it is quite obvious that they are themselves extremely heavy to provide the counter weight. That is why their tires worn out quicker than other vehicles. Periodic changing of tires reduces the wear and tear on the vehicle’s transmission and the stress upon the driver. It isn’t that much difficult to replace the tires of a forklift and you can do it easily by yourself.

    Being the driver of a forklift, you should keep monitoring the tires regularly. Any signs of wear and tear will indicate the time to change the tires before taking risk of a greater loss. Normally, when 40 per cent of the tire is worn out, it is recommended to replace them with the new ones.

    Once you know your forklift’s tires are worn out and need replacement, you have to arrange for new tires immediately. Before choosing the tires for your forklift, you have to determine the type of tires most suitable in the working conditions of your vehicle. For working on smoother indoor or outdoor areas, standard rubber tires are good to use. However, if you have to use your forklift on a rougher terrain, it is recommended to use pneumatic tires, which are thicker than the conventional tires. Polyurethane tires are decent enough for the indoor use of the forklift.

    Place the forklift jack besides the tire of vehicle which you have to replace. Remember that a regular car jack will not be able to lift and you need to have the special forklift jack for this purpose.

    Once you have lifted up the vehicle, use the air impact wrench to remove the nuts on the wheel and it will come out easily for you to change the tire.

    If you want to replace the polyurethane tire, you need to remove the tire and press the new one back onto the wheel. However, if you have to replace the solid rubber tire, you have to remove the worn out tire as a whole and then install the new tire in its place.

    Gently reverse the forklift jack crank to take out the jack.
