Espresso is the purest, most concentrated beverage made from coffee beans, and is used by bartenders as the base for a seemingly endless variety of coffee drinks. Popularised by coffee chain Starbucks, the Iced Caramel Macchiato is one such drink – it uses espresso made from freshly roasted beans as a base, and blends it with vanilla and caramel to create a cool flavourful concoction that presents a perfect balance of sweet caramel and warm, bitter coffee.
Ingredients
  • Fresh espresso: ½ cup
  • Vanilla syrup: 2 tbsp
  • Cold milk
  • High ball glass: 16 oz
  • Ice cubes
  • Fresh whipped cream
  • Caramel sauce: 4 tbsp
Instructions
  1. To begin, brew half a cup of fresh espresso. There are no rules regarding the brand that needs to be used for this. Just make sure the beans are freshly roasted, and of premium quality, in order to ensure that your iced coffee tastes great.
  2. You might consider using the Starbucks Espresso Roast for this purpose. Make sure your espresso is at room temperature before you begin making your Iced Caramel Macchiato.
  3. Now, place your 16 oz. high ball glass on a working surface, and pour in two tablespoons of vanilla syrup. Then fill up approximately 3/5 of the glass with cold milk – make sure you use chilled milk, and it is best if this is full cream as opposed to skim.
  4. Then, add two to three ice cubes to the glass, and stir to combine the cold milk and the vanilla syrup. Once this is done, pick up your ½ cup of freshly brewed espresso, and slowly start pouring this into the highball glass.
  5. The aim here is to make it so that the espresso goes only halfway down into the glass, so pour slowly, in order to ensure that most of it remains floating atop the ice and the vanilla and milk mixture.
  6. Once you have poured all the espresso into the high ball glass, top it with a generous dollop of whipped cream. Use a piping bag with a patterned top, to get the whipped cream to form a swirled puff at the top of the highball glass.
  7. Finally, drizzle four tablespoons of caramel sauce all over the top, onto the whipped cream. This can be any caramel sauce you prefer, but once again, make sure it is the best quality you can find.
  8. Once the drink has been topped with the sauce, your Iced Caramel Macchiato is ready. Serve chilled.
