Bananas and caramel are both delicious on their own, but when put together, they form a winning combination. The gooey, sticky sweetness of bananas and the velvety smoothness of caramel taste great together, and can be used as a topping on a variety of sweet treats and desserts.
Ingredients
  • Sugar: ½ cup
  • Water: 2 tablespoons
  • Heavy cream: ½ cup
  • Butter: 2 tablespoons
  • Bananas: 2
Instructions
  1. Start by buying the bananas. Make sure you get bananas that are yellow, firm, and fragrant – if the bananas are mushy, or too ripe, they won’t be able to hold their own, and crumble into the hot caramel, forming odd, unpleasant lumps.
  2. Peel the bananas, and then place them on a clean cutting board. Use a knife to cut both bananas into very thin, even slices. Set these aside for later use.
  3. Next, start working on the caramel. Place a large, heavy skillet on the stove over medium heat, and allow it to heat up a bit. Then, pour in the water, and let it get lukewarm.
  4. Now, add the sugar to the pan – pour it right into the middle of the skillet, into a mound, and allow it to sit there for a while. Then, use a wooden spoon and start stirring it into the water.
  5. Once the sugar is completely dissolved into the water, stop stirring. Bring the heat under the skillet up to medium high, and allow the mixture to boil – make sure you do not stir at all during this process.
  6. After 5 to 8 minutes have elapsed, and the mixture in the skillet becomes thick, and golden brown, add in the butter and heavy cream immediately. It is absolutely essential that you use heavy cream for this sauce, as you will be unable to attain the desired thickness and richness without it.
  7. The mixture will start to sputter and clump at this point. Keep stirring and cooking it, until it becomes smooth, creamy, and thick.
  8. Take it off the heat, and add in the bananas. Stir, to coat the bananas in the sauce, and then allow it to cool. Finally, pour it into a sauce boat for use.
