Making Your Own Flea Shampoo for Dogs

As many of you may already know, having your dog get fleas can lead to some serious problems. Fleas feed on the blood of your dogs and can go months without feeding. Females however do require blood in order to produce eggs. The full gestation period for flea eggs is 2-3 weeks, meaning that a flea problem left untreated can become serious very quickly.

Luckily, there is a simple and effective home made dog shampoo that you can use to treat your pet’s fleas.

Things Required:

– Apple cider vinegar: 1 cup
– Unscented and dye-free dish soap: 1 cup
– Filtered water: 1 cup
– Empty bottles
– Bath tub
– Flea comb (optional but effective)

Instructions

  • 1

    Prepare Your Shampoo

In order to prepare your shampoo, simply add vinegar, soap and water. Mix these ingredients thoroughly and place into empty bottles. Ideally, these bottles would have nozzles similar to a dish soap bottle.

  • 2

    Tub Time

Fill your bath tub as high as you can with warm water. The higher the water level on the dog's body, the easier it will be to drown the fleas. The bath should take at least 15 minutes to ensure the fleas get done in.

Some dogs are not as comfortable in water as others and so, know your animal and what it takes to calm them.

    Pour and Rub

Pour your home made shampoo into your hands and begin massaging it onto your dog. Be sure to form a rich lather. The vinegar and dish soap will aid in attracting and separating the fleas from your dog. Allow the solution to remain on the dog for 5 minutes before washing off.

Note: As you wait for the 5 minutes to pass, use the flea comb in and around the dogs face. Make sure to not comb the dogs eyes, nose and delicate parts. Be sure to comb the ears.

    Rinse and Dry

Once the 5 minutes has passed, rinse your dog well and towel dry them. Pass over the dog with the flea comb once again all over their body to ensure all the fleas are gone.
