How to Make Your Own Ear Wash

Earwax is produced naturally by the cerumen glands present in the ear canal. Cerumen lubricates your inner ear, protects them from foreign agents like insects and bugs and cleans away dirt and debris. However, these cerumen glands at times get hyperactive and start producing excess wax, clogging your ears. If your are also suffering from muffled hearing or you are feeling pain/itching in your ears, this is perhaps the time to properly clean them. While you can always have your ears checked by your ENT (Ear Nose and Throat) specialist, making your own ear wash at home is not too hard either.

Things Required:

– Hydrogen peroxide
– Vinegar
– Measuring cup
– Plastic bowl
– Eyedropper
– Bulb syringe
– Isopropyl rubbing alcohol

Instructions

  • 1

Pour half cup of hydrogen peroxide into a plastic container.

  • 2

Add an equal amount of apple cider vinegar to the container.

  • 3

Swirl the container to mix the peroxide and vinegar. Both these ingredients can be bought from your local drugstore or pharmacy.

  • 4

In a medium sized mixing bowl, pour half cup of warm water. The water should not be too hot or too cold.

  • 5

Add the vinegar and peroxide mixture to the bowl containing warm water.

  • 6

Mix all the three liquids thoroughly.

  • 7

Your ear wash mixture is ready. Fill an eyedropper or a syringe with this concoction.

  • 8

Now tilt your head in such a way that your non-affected ear is pressed against the shoulder, while the affected one is tipped up towards the ceiling.

  • 9

Using your fingers, gently pull the earlobe of the affected ear away from your face to straighten the ear canal.

  • 10

Place the eyedropper or syringe filled with peroxide solution at the opening of the afflicted ear and squeeze ear wash mixture into the ear.

  • 11

Remain in this position for five minutes. You may hear a crackling sound as the ear wash mixture softens the wax.

  • 12

Place a towel on the ear and tilt your head in the opposite direction, allowing the ear wash and softened wax to drain from the ear.

  • 13

Pour a couple of drops of isopropyl rubbing alcohol into the ear that has been treated with ear wash. This will kill any germs remaining inside your ear and will also help evaporate any water remaining in the canal.
