How to Change Motorcycle Handlebars

Handle bars in motor bikes are of utmost importance as they control the steering and most of the bike’s functionality such as headlight, clutch handle and front brakes. If you do not have a comfortable front handle, you will not like to ride your bike for long driving sessions. Moreover, if the handle bar is heavy and difficult to turn, it can lead to a dangerous situation.

Original handle bars are of normal quality, but some people don’t want normal, they want super stylish bike handles. There are two common types of handle bars in use: clip-on handles, wide handles.

Instructions

  • 1

Put a cloth or towel on the surface of the motor bike tank to protect it from scratches during the removal and installation of handle bar. Use a spanner to unscrew the bolts attached to the main central rod that attaches these handles with the main body. Undo the nuts affixing the left side handle with the central rod.

Left handle is home to the left side control panel which contains turn signal switch, head light switch and the choke (in some models it is on the right hand side). Now take out the bolts attached to the right hand side control box, which in turn is further attached to the throttle of the bike. You will have to remove the throttle cable for removing the handle bars, so note its configuration on a piece of paper before proceeding forward.

Remove the bolts which hold the mirrors in their place. Remove other pieces of equipment affixed to the handle bar with the help of bolts. Keep the cables installed in their place and place the bar components gently on top of the cloth.

Take off the handle grips with bear hands. Do not use excessive force if they are hard to remove, use a bit of air pressure to remove them from the handle bar. If you do not have a source of high air pressure, use WD-40 to soften up the grip. Now you should be able to take off the grip by sliding it down. Remember that you only have to remove the grip from the left handle as the right hand side grip is attached to the throttle. Remove the clamps from on top of the handle bars. You will be now able to separate handle bars completely from the motor bike and put them away.
