Select people who share the same desire. As non-profit organizations are working for the welfare of the society, selecting those who have hidden profit motives will violate the sole purpose of the organization. The chosen candidates, in principle, must be driven by the desire to do good for the society, as any motivation based on rewards will lead to inefficiency. They should be willing contributors and have clear thoughts regarding the purpose and intent of the organization.

As for the qualification criteria, it is best to choose people with some sort of relevant experience. People already possessing certain competency skills will be able to come up with innovative ideas and solutions to problems. This however, must not go against certain candidates, who may not have the relevant experience but are thorough professionals in the field of business, finance and arts. This will not only provide diversity, by helping the organization  handle its financial statements, contracts and liabilities, but directors who can complement each other can assist and direct management in complex decision making processes.

Meeting bylaws is also important. Board members tend to leave their posts as well, even though the job is a satisfactory one. Therefore a universal rule must be applied when it comes to practising bylaws. If the tenure of one of the candidates is coming to an end, it is important that others get equal opportunities. For that, you must outline the proper length of terms. It is essential that internal rules of an organization are made in way that provides transparency and keeps the personal integrity intact. This option is not mandatory, but adhering to it will make the procedure less tedious.
