Twitter Hits 400 Million Tweets Per Day

On Wednesday, June 6, CEO Dick Costolo of Twitter stated that the micro blogging site was now getting a whopping 400 million tweets per day. This is a big jump from the previous month where the tech company reported that the site was getting 340 million tweets per day. The Twitter CEO was being interviewed at the Economist’s Ideas Economy: Information 2012 conference when he mentioned the details of Twitter’s user activity.

The CEO also spoke about the meta-data being collected and Twitter’s success with mobile advertising. If the numbers are to be believed then Twitter is amassing a lot of data on its users every day. The more people tweet the more easily the company can identify larger trends or use data mining to discover patterns and other information that is not immediately obvious. Costolo also talked about the company plans to soon make the discovery component of Twitter more easily accessible to users. Twitter is looking to make the interface of the site more streamlined and make the experience more personalized based on user action.

The Twitter head did not give much detail on the mobile advertising revenue of Twitter but did say that it was “doing delightfully well.” He went on to explain that Twitter by its very nature was suited to mobile use. The short post format made it easier for mobile users to write messages and post to their accounts. Already it is obvious to the company that the “engagement level” of mobile users of Twitter is more than that of people using the service through the web. Interestingly, Twitter launched its ad system for the web first and then its mobile service and already the mobile ad revenue is catching up and Twitter has seen several days where monetization from mobile is higher than non-mobile.

Days after the interview, Twitter quietly released a new feature for users that allowed them to post rich media enabled tweets to Facebook. Previously Tweets that contained Rich Media that were also being sent to Facebook lost the feature in the social network. Now the posts on Facebook can contain Twitter photos, hashtags and usernames.
