Microsoft Might Acquire Yammer, According to People At Yammer

It has been rumored that Microsoft is interested in acquiring Yammer for more than $1 billion. According to Business Insider, the software giant is going to acquire Yammer, as several people were also discussing about the deal which is expected to be finalized on this Friday.

It is also heard people were talking about the possible acquisition right near the company’s head office, which is located at Caltrain station in San Francisco.

In addition, a woman named Sarah Taylor, who is an administrative manager at Ignition Talent Group, tweeted that while she was sitting at a coffee shop located in close proximity to yammer’s office, several people were discussing about the possible buyout.

Well that’s not all, Business Insider even reports that a person, who declined to be identified, said Microsoft is in the works of buying the startup, and negations are kept strictly private.

San Francisco-based Yammer provides a Facebook-style interface used by more than 200,000 companies. It allows employees to post, share and discuss items inside companies.

Yammer’s client includes more than 80 percent of Fortune 500 companies such as Ford Motor Co, Vodacom, LG Electronics and many others.

Acquiring Yammer would also push Microsoft into the hot market for social enterprise tools that will ultimately put Microsoft into competition with Saleforce.com. If this acquisition happens, it would be a part of ongoing consolidation in business-oriented social media, like Salesforce.com acquired Buddy Media.

CEO of Box.net, Aaron Levie said on Twitter, “Microsoft buying Yammer would be their best strategic move since launching MS-DOS.”

Last year, Microsoft acquired Skype for $8.5, which was the company’s largest acquisition to date. A representative from Microsoft said that the company is not going to comment on these rumors. However, Yammer is yet to response on this news.
