Tenth Worker at Ipad Factory Commits Suicide
According to reliable reports, an employee who was working in Foxconn Technology Group recently committed suicide because of the poor working conditions at the company. This tragedy is reported to have happened on Wednesday, when the 23 year-old worker jumped from his apartment building located in the city of Chengdu.
It is the first incident since the company decided with Apple Inc, its U.S. client, to improve workplace environment. The young worker was appointed in the company last month. The case is now being investigated by the local police to ascertain facts.
Foxconn Technology Group is considered to be the main supplier for Apple – which is an American multinational company – dealing in iPhones and iPads.
Back in March of this year, both companies decided to make significant improvements and up-gradation in the workplace environment of people working at Foxconn. At present, there are more than 1 million people working at the company, all busy in assembling iPhones and iPads.
The agreement states that Foxconn would employ millions of new workers to reduce overtime work. It was also decided in the agreement that the company will make considerable improvements in safety protocols, while providing ample housing and other facilities.
The decision was taken after Apple allegedly made severe criticisms over the working conditions provided to workers at its different suppliers’ companies in China. In the mean time, Apple has also shown its support for an investigation that should be undertaken by the independent Fair Labor Association at the beginning of this year. This investigation will eventually help tone down the criticisms that Apple has had to face related to its products that they are built in extremely poor conditions.
This isn’t the first incident of its kind as back in 2010, some more suicides were reported at Foxconn while three employees died in an explosion at one of its plants last year.
