Criticism on Facebook’s E-Mail Update
Facebook is facing severe criticism from users after the company came up with a new policy to hide users’ third-party email addresses from their profiles, and the Facebook.com address is the only one that can be seen by people.
The company responds to this situation by saying that this step was taken to make details “consistent” across its site.
If this policy becomes successful in the feature, the social networking site will be able to boost more advertising sales.
But some users simply rejected the policy and named it “annoying” and “lame” and revealed instructions on how to display their previous email addresses instead of the new one given by Facebook.
Emails that are sent to @facebook.com addresses come with posts sent through the network’s internal message system, which will eventually enable users to pick up both types of communication from one place.
However, the company received extremely bad response from people. According to an analyst, Anthony Mullen, “It reeks of the same move Google did with its Buzz product when it automatically opted people in, and users recoiled against the action.”
“This is a direction Facebook needs to move in – your email is a proxy for your identity on the internet and Facebook wants to usurp people’s pre-existing email identities with their own to help drive up traffic to its site and lock users into its service.”
“The problem is the lack of transparency – it has acted without asking for members’ permission first.”
However, the social networking site has finally addressed the concerns and has replaced the e-mail accounts listed on their profiles with the @facebook.com email address it provided them yesterday.
In order to change the email account which is listed on your Facebook profile, it will simply take a few minutes. The steps are given below;
– Open your Facebook timeline.
– Go to about section.
– Press on Edit in the Contact Info section.
– You will view a crossed out circle next to your personal email address. Make it to the open circle, just like the one next to your Facebook email address. In case you do not want your Facebook email visible, just mark it as hidden from your profile.
– Click the save button and you are finished with the process. Your original email address has now been restored.
