How to Stretch Leather Cowboy Boots

Have you recently bought leather cowboy boots that are too tight, but you cannot get them exchanged for some reason? Did you recently pull out an old pair of leather cowboy boots from the closet, ones that you have not worn in years and therefore are no longer a perfect fit? In both the cases, the only solution is to stretch them.

While the Internet offers plenty of methods to stretch leather cowboys, majority of them damage the leather in the process. There is one way, however, that can help you make your feet feel really comfortable in the boots and not do any damage to the leather in the process.

The first thing that you need to do is to clean both the inside as well as the outside of your leather cowboy boots using a rag. Fill a small tub with warm water and dip the rag in it to dampen it. Be sure to damp it just slightly. Once it is damp, use the rag to clean the boots. If the boots have been worn a few times and are somewhat old, make sure you get into the creases and folds as well. When the rag loses its dampness, dip it again in warm water. Make sure you dip a different portion of rag in warm water each time, so that you use a clean section each time.

After you are done cleaning the leather cowboy boots with a rag and warm water, grab another rag and this time use saddle soap to clean your boots instead of warm water.

  • 3

Rub the fresh rag into the tin of saddle soap and then rub it into the leather. Start off from the inside of the boot, pushing your hand as deep into the boot as possible.

  • 4

After rubbing the inside of the boot with saddle soap, coat the exterior of the boot with it as well. Be sure to give some extra attention to the sides of the boot, particularly the area where it is connected to the sole through stitching.

  • 5

Continue to rub saddle soap inside and outside your leather cowboy boots until they develop a sheen and start feeling damp to touch.

  • 6

Once they take on a warm sheen and are slightly damp to touch, wear an old pair of socks and slide your feet into the boots. Keep wearing the boots for an hour or two. Walk around in them as well if walking does not hurt your feet. Wearing the boots will help in warming up the leather.

  • 7

After keeping the boots on for a couple of hours, remove them and fill them up with old damp newspaper. Fill them up nice and tight. Leave them to dry overnight once you have packed them with damp newspaper.

Repeat the process for a week, after which the effect of your hard work will begin to show.
