How to Polish Brass

Brass is a wonderful metal alloy composed of copper and zinc in varying ratios. It is used extensively in the making of instruments as well as decorative pieces around the household. If you own brass items, then you are fully aware that over time, it can lose its lustre and become oxidized.

Luckily, there is a home made solution that will easily and effectively polish your brass to get it back to its original state. The following guide details everything you need and the process involved.

Things Required:

– distilled white vinegar (1 cup)
– salt (1 teaspoon)
– flour

Instructions

  • 1

    The Solution

In a bowl, mix the vinegar and salt well using a spoon. Once you have done so, slowly add cooking flour to the liquid until it forms a thick paste. Stir well as you add the flour. Remember you will want a nice smooth texture to your mixture so be sure to check the consistency while mixing the ingredients together.

  • 2

    Spread Paste

Use your finger or an old toothbrush to spread the paste onto the brass items that you have. Spread the paste evenly and well over the item. You might want to use a clean cloth to first wipe away and dirt or debris from your brass items before applying this solution. Make sure to get a nice even spread over the brass items with the solution as you try to cover the entire surface area with the homemade solution.

If you need to create more paste due to a high number of items, do so once again following the ratio in the step above.

    Wait Time

Once you have spread the paste, allow the item to sit in its covered glory for 15 minutes. Be sure that the items are fully covered with the homemade solution.

    Rinse and Dry

Once the 15 minutes has passed, run the tap and allow the item to sit under the water until the paste is removed. As an aid, use the same toothbrush (clean first) to remove the excess paste that may be in tough to reach areas. Be sure to gently scrub away the excess solution from the brass items while you rinse everything. Do not scrub too hard as you do not want to damage the brass items with the brush.

Use a clean soft cloth to dry the brass items once rinsed. Make sure that the brass items are properly dried so that you can put them back where they were before cleaning. Make it a habit to clean your brass items on a regular basis to keep them shining and looking beautiful.
